In May 2011, ODOT awarded the 1st Phase of the Columbus Crossroads, the largest highway reconstruction program in the history of Central Ohio. Through a value-based selection process, the $200M I-71/670 interchange reconstruction was awarded to the Design-Build Team of Kokosing Construction and CH2M HILL. When completed, the I-71/670 interchange will improve safety and operational efficiency in a manner that brings new business to Downtown Columbus, revitalizes the King Lincoln District by connecting it and east neighborhoods with the downtown, and promotes economic development for Ohio.
While a general overview of design-build contracting will be provided, this presentation will focus on I-71/670 project delivery through the eyes of the contractor and designer. Why is ODOT using design-build here? How did design-build “revise the blueprint” during CH2M HILL’s design process? What were the challenges Kokosing faced with a new set of roles/ responsibilities in building the job?
